Facts about cats in some shelters. If you have anything to contribute please email us and we will consider your request.

"Born to Die" - Hard facts about how some animals end up at shelters!

1. Many cats find themselves in a shelter for several reasons, moving, new baby fears, not excepting a new pet, potty issues to name a few. Many of these I see no reason for being left at a shelter! All of these things do require commitment on the part of the family to resolve! And it can be done! You just need some patience, education and the right tools.
* Many are left due to there owner becoming ill or incapacitated and can no longer care for the pet. Still this is no reason to leave the kitty at a shelter. Make sure you always put in your will or make it known among family who you want contacted to care for the re-homing of your pets in this situation!
* Many are strays that are picked up or dumped by unknown people. Much of this problem can be taken care of by spaying and neutering all companion pets! Please if you have a pet needing low cost spaying and neutering, do a quick google search on low cost spay and neuter for your area! Many places have no animal trespass rules that means cats must be kept indoors only or have a secure outdoor area or cat fenced yard.

2. Cats as a rule do not care for change (to put it mildly) some are more adaptable than others and some it might even take a while for the stress to hit them. Cats in busy shelters will 99% of the time leave with at least a kitty cold and even though it is very similar to the human cold it will still take a bit of time for them to get over it and on occasions a lot of antibiotics. Many shelters will euthenize them to try and control cost and infection of other cats!

3. Many shelters only allow as little as 3 day's for a stray cat to be claimed before being killed. At the most sometimes 6 day's total for adoption for strays. Many shelters will euthenize or kill your pet on entering the shelter if they are to full or if the cat acts like most cats very frightened by all the scary changes.

4. Shelter cats do not get adopted as often as dogs due to the fact cats do not show their true personality in a shelter situation due to being to stressed and to scared.

5. Everyone wants kittens with the misconception that only a kitten will bond with them, this is totally untrue! I have had 10 year old cats come to me and bond almost instantly. So because everyone wants kittens many wonderful adult cats are not given the chance and are euthenized more often.
